K-1: Automating Administrative Procedures in WebCT Vista
Detailed Description:In this session, participants will learn methods to combine scripting solutions, XML imports, and SIAPI commands in order to automate common WebCT Vista administrative procedures. You will discover how to perform automatic course content migration from a console, give faculty the power to combine multiple sections into a single course container, and provide faculty with the ability to control student access to their courses. This presentation will also include a discussion about automating other common WebCT Vista administrative tasks.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Integrating the campus: Technical solutions and extended uses
Target Audience:System Administrators, Senior Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Notre Dame will give a presentation highlighting its methods for automating three administrative procedures using perl, XML, and SIAPI imports. These methods will be described in a general manner that can be applied to institutions running other environments. The processes that will be analyzed are as follows: transferring content across sections, combining multiple Vista sections into a single section (leveraging Vista cross-listing to maintain integration with the SIS), and allowing faculty to control student access to their courses. The session will also encourage discussion on similar methods to automate other common Vista administration tasks, and will touch on the challenges related to communicating these new methods to faculty.
