L-1: A Picture IS Worth a Thousand Words!
Detailed Description:Tired of typing long, descriptive narratives in your effort to provide feedback for online submissions? In this session, you will learn how faculty use pen-based electronic grading, audio, and video screen capture to provide efficient, high-quality feedback. See demonstrations of various software options, hear about research examining their value, and learn about alternate applications across disciplines.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, E-learning Managers, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Pre-service educators, at the University of West Georgia (UWG), are required to take a rigorous and comprehensive Introduction to Instructional Technology course which is now offered totally online. Student evaluations reveal the need for more feedback on their project submissions. Faculty were faced with the laborious task of typing long narratives explaining problems with student submissions and suggestions for improvement, only to realize the written explanation failed to communicate effectively. Providing detailed feedback to 80-100 online students who submit 25 projects each has been an obstacle. The use of pen-based grading and audio visual screen capture has provided an effective and illustrative solution for faculty at UWG. Attendees will gain insight into the use of pen-based electronic tools and audio visual capture software, examples of instructor feedback provided to pre-service educators, and data assessing its impact, including survey results from approximately 100 students who participated in the course. Realizing that this approach could also be effective across disciplines – most notably in teaching math, science, art, and in technical support – examples of alternate applications will be provided. Demonstrations of software options (some free), applicable hardware, and limitations, will also be shared.
