F-4: Are Your Students Successful Online Learners?
Detailed Description:How does one become a successful online learner? Do learners get “stuck” in the technology and lose focus on the course content? Using the Quiz/Survey tool in WebCT, you can create a test to assess your students’ skills and abilities as successful online learners. This test can be tailored to each course in order to match the instructor's style of teaching. Northern Michigan University (a laptop university) will describe how this test is used, share a copy of the test, and even award prizes to participants in this highly interactive session.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and student support models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, E-learning Managers, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:How does one become a successful online learner? Do learners get “stuck” in the technology and loose focus on the course content? Do faculty feel pressure from students to teach in a certain style? An online test provided to students to review their skills and abilities can provide the student an overview of the course expectations, information university logistical issues, and a review of their skills and abilities. It has been observed that students overrate their own abilities but the test provides a mechanism to level the playing field for everyone in the class from instructor to student.
