Abstract Text:In 1997, we initiated the Flexible Delivery Project, the aim of which was to encourage and develop the use of online technologies to enhance teaching and learning. WebCT was implemented, and from this arose many separate innovative projects, and an audit showed students' enthusiastic response to these outcomes. However, such a compartmentalised approach was deemed insufficient, and we sought a way to bring these benefits to all areas across the university. As such, we set the goal of integrating an online presence into every subject. It was decided that by 2005, all topics would have a minimum WebCT presence, which was to include topic information, communication tools, and links to external sites. This presentation will discuss the organisational strategies we used to mainstream the use of WebCT across Flinders University, such that it was done in a manner that academic staff would be comfortable with, and that would maximise students' learning and support. In 2005 we conducted a multifaceted evaluation in order to gauge students' use and perceptions of our implementation of WebCT. The results indicated that students were overwhelmingly positive about our use of WebCT, that it was widely used across all areas of the university, and that many subjects showed extensive use of WebCT beyond that mandated by the minimum presence guidelines. As a result, we have decided to continue and expand our use of online tools (and WebCT in particular) to enhance learning at Flinders.
