M-1: "On-Time" WebCT Training: A Faculty Development Model
Detailed Description:All too often, instructional technology trainers find themselves preparing 'Just-in-Time' training for faculty on using WebCT. This session will describe and demonstrate the application of a modified approach dubbed the "On-Time" WebCT training model, which is used to develop a training curriculum. In practice, the "On-Time" approach results in a training curriculum that anticipates faculty needs respective of the institution’s academic calendar and the likely needs of faculty throughout the academic year. Planning documents will be provided.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:In instructional technology training circles everyone has heard of ‘just in time' training. It was a buzz concept a few years ago and was seen as the ‘new best way' to deal with quickly changing technologies and processes for accomplishing work tasks.

However, training faculty to use and stay current with their WebCT skills has illustrated that 'just in time' is not always the best approach. As an alternative we offer the 'on time' model to planning and implementing a WebCT faculty training program.

The 'on-time' approach recognizes that the academic calendar is relatively stable. Likewise, faculty needs for training are tied to predictable events in the academic year. By aligning training objectives with predictable faculty needs we improve both the relevancy and timeliness of the training program and ultimately improve retention and transfer of trained WebCT skills; -Outcomes that benefit everyone in the educational enterprise.

This session will describe application of the ‘on-time' training model and presents some helpful materials to guide the development of an ‘on-time' WebCT training approach at the participants' institution.
