Detailed Description:Are you ready for smooth sailing in your efforts to support distance education students? This session will feature an online orientation tool created in WebCT to address student deficiencies in general technology and WebCT skills. Come discover tools that empower students to be successful in their online courses, plus provide you with valuable data.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The Online Orientation for student support is a tool developed to address deficits in student technical competencies. Using a WebCT course format, the orientation is presented as a content module with two sections: Tips for Success and Tips for WebCT. Tips for Success addresses skills needed to configure a personal computer, configure a browser, and download software to engage in the online environment. Tips for WebCT addresses skills needed to navigate and perform specific tasks within the WebCT environment. Students are presented objectives for both sections of the orientation and they are assessed in a pretest and post test. The tutorial contains text, illustrative graphics, and Captivate animations with audio. This tool was developed to assist students utilizing online course components and, in turn, reduce the support responsibility of instructors. As face-to-face orientations failed to offer a flexible alternative to students, the online orientation was developed to provide on-demand support for students unable to come to campus to receive one-on-one technical assistance.
