Abstract Text:We will illustrate how the creation of an online Master of Education program in Curriculum and Instructional Technology has enhanced faculty's regular teaching. The session will show case several modules in the masters program and outstanding work of graduate students studying through this program. It will examine key components in course design and teaching methods and share "how-to" information about successful approaches including active teaching and learning methods.

Unusually this masters program is led and taught by regular faculty and a few on campus students are welcome to join each course. For this reason the creation and update of the online version of each course has provided each faculty a chance to crystallize and reinterpret their curriculum and related research into an online context. One byproduct has been to increase the online aspects to enhance on campus courses. The program's web site http://projects.educ.iastate.edu/~citmed/ provides useful information especially prepared for the distance-learning community, details of the faculty and extra information for prospective students.

The three-year program consists of 32 credits and is offered in a learning community environment. The delivery of the courses often includes a blend of face-to-face and web-based components. The program is designed for K-12 teachers and other educational practitioners who want to earn a master's and are seeking leadership positions for infusing technology into teaching and learning environments. The Iowa State Department of Curriculum and Instruction emphasizes appropriate and effective integration of technology in teacher education. The credits students earn are the same as those earned on campus and taught by the same faculty. Technology allows much of the program to be delivered to distant learners anywhere and anytime.
