Abstract Text:Carl Sandburg College covers a 3000 square mile service area in West Central Illinois. There are twenty six school districts located within the College district. It is the mission of the College "To provide accessible, quality education in a caring environment by keeping the learner's needs at the center of decision making and by working in partnership with communities of the College district" In 2002, the College birthed the concept of the Wireless Network (EDUNET) and presented it to its Board of Trustees at their regular meeting, with a recommendation to commission a feasibility study. The study results came back affirming the feasibility of the network to offer reliable and high speed district wide connectivity. Combined with the fact that wireless technology has progressed rapidly and is the modern reliable and low cost alternative for wired networks, the College chose the wireless option. This session will cover the initial concept and phases of construction for the EDUNET project. This network is the first of its kind in the country. Details will be shared about the feasibility study conducted, the RFP's, the providers' vision and the overall impact for the Carl Sandburg College district. In addition, results from the implementation of this network and the successes of our TechConnect and Cyber Camp WebCT training sessions will be provided. This in-depth training for K-12 and College faculty paved the way for an increase in online learning, supplemental and dual-credit courses. Without this ground-breaking network, these opportunities could not have been realized. EDUNET was awarded the ICCCA's Innovation Award in 2005. Presenters will allow time for the audience to discuss the potential for this type of network.
