Detailed Description:This session is designed to invite discourse about the vital importance of creating a classroom community for distance learners. The presentation will focus on creative and effective strategies for using the discussion tool in WebCT, along with other web-based tools such as WebQuests and WebWalks. A group workshop during this session will allow participants to walk away with at least one lesson or concept they can implement immediately in their courses.

Abstract Text:This roundtable presentation is designed to invite discourse about the vital importance of creating a classroom community for distance learners. The presentation will focus on creative and effective strategies for using the discussion tool in WebCT, along with other web-based tools like WebQuests and WebWalks. Relevant data regarding the contribution that student engagement has on overall success and retention will be offered and discussed. The presentation will highlight various applications and styles of use for the discussion tool. Some discussion of best practices and strategies for avoiding hazards will be held. The presenters will share specific examples and lessons, and participants will be invited to share their own success stories and challenges. A period of group workshop will be incorporated to allow participants to walk away with at least one lesson or concept they can implement immediately into their courses. Outcomes for this session include: A greater understanding of the effectiveness of discussion based lesson plans.
