H-13: Using WebCT To Conduct Student Elections
Detailed Description:Thomson Rivers University’s student society was looking for a way to conduct elections that would increase participation of the voters and improve access to information. This session will explore how the student society successfully leveraged WebCT to conduct an election and doubled the number of voters from the previous year. Learn about the voting process in WebCT and participate in a follow-up discussion.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Integrating the campus: Technical solutions and extended uses
Target Audience:Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, Senior Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The intent of this presentation is to demonstrate how a Learning Management System such as WebCT can be used to conduct a secure method of conducting elections. PowerPoint will be the presentation tool to show the best practices of conducting an election. Concerns/problems expressed by students, faculty and admin, on a traditional paper based process being replaced with an on-line process must be handled with a strategic plan and appropriate information to ensure success. Potential and actual abuses to the process need to be anticipated and appropriate mechanisms must be in place. The experience at Thompson Rivers University should assist those that are contemplating a move to an on-line election process and their university community having to deal with change.
