Abstract Text:Different infrastructure paradigms have been implemented with the specific purpose to support the implementation of Distributed Learning Systems in the teaching/learning process. Since 1997, The University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) has implemented the use of a Learning Management System (LMS) to support the Distributed Learning environment. Since the first time the preferred Learning Management System was utilized at UTPA, the number of courses, as well as the number of faculty and students has increased rapidly. Statistics show that for the current Spring 2006 semester, there are more than 500 courses and 10,000 users in WebCT. This presentation aims to share the current support and technology infrastructure put in place at UTPA to successfully support the thriving implementation of WebCT.

The concept of a “One-Stop-Shop” will be introduced to share with the audience the type of support necessary to help faculty and students focus on teaching/learning rather than deal with technical hurdles. The presentation will also help other institutions to better comprehend the type of resources and personnel from different disciplines necessary to support the implementation of a LMS at an institution.

The presentation will also raise awareness of issues that arise from daily operations and implementation. In some instances, these operations have the potential to have an institutional impact and become Mission Critical operations. Some advice will be shared to address these institutional issues by providing examples of procedures put in placed at UTPA to overcome the institutional challenges.
