G-13: Managing and Training Non-Experts
Detailed Description:What do you do when your WebCT "experts" really aren't? Although course designers, developers, and instructors are experts in their field of study, they may not always be as technically savvy as you would like. Proper training and strong managerial practices can be key to overcoming this hurdle. This session will explore how developing fool-proof methods of course design, communication, and ongoing training can help to ensure that your WebCT Vista users and online courses are successful.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:As a non-traditional, distance-learning college, we have a diverse pool of people that contribute to our online course deployment process. Our challenge is to provide a feasible and scalable managerial and training foundation for course designers and instructors with a broad range of technical skills. We get rare opportunities for face-to-face contact with our instructors, while our course designers are on-site and available for more frequent communication and training. In this showcase, we will share our experiences and strategies outlined below to successfully train and manage our "non-experts".

With our virtual campus, we must provide and enforce policies and procedures to ensure the technical success of our online courses. As we went through a major conversion, we discovered the need to map out the life of a course from start to finish. Although we had been going through the motions, we hadn't strongly enforced procedures and timelines. We've created a plan to communicate policies, procedures, innovations and updates to our WebCT users. Part of this strategy includes internal and external e-mail communication and periodic on-site forums for WebCT users.

At Excelsior, we have staff on-site that takes care of designing and setting up the courses for the instructors. In light of our fast-growing online programs, we have formed a plan that simplifies the course design process. This includes course templating (WebCT and Dreamweaver), utilizing style sheets throughout all online courses, and a means of using WebDav to connect directly to WebCT from Dreamweaver.

Training presents specific challenges. We have developed a customized online course to train our faculty at-a-distance on the "nuts and bolts" of the areas of WebCT that each instructor is responsible for. For on-site course designers, we offer both week-long training sessions for first-time users, as well as ongoing, specialized training for more experienced users.
