L-13: Using WEBCT to Expose Students to Service Learning
Detailed Description:Online instruction and Service learning are not usually used in the same context. However, these two concepts can be used to expose students to real life projects. With learning outcomes and rubrics designed in advance, service learning and online instruction can allow students the ability to participate with a real life experience online. The purpose of this study is to explore how students enrolled in an online course can participate in a "Service Learning" project
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and student support models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Universities across the country are finding innovative ways to reach the diverse population of students. One innovation is e-learning better known as online courses. Although there have been various criticism about e-learning universities across the country are offering online courses to attract students to their campus. Online courses are growing at such a rapid rate that students are now asking “Does your campus offer online classes?” The answer to this question sometimes encourages decisions on university selection. Webster defines a laboratory as a region, building or classroom which offers opportunities for observation and practice and experimentation. Scientists are known to have laboratories to test theories and conduct experiments. The Savannah Entrepreneurial Center is a living laboratory located in Savannah, Georgia which encourages students to study theories and conduct experiments in helping individuals to become entrepreneurs. The purpose of this paper is to introduce teaching strategies that combine E-Learning with Service Leaning in a living laboratory. The living laboratory (The Entrepreneurial Center) is located in City of Savannah , Georgia. The E- Learning (WEBCT) is an online course. Together these two strategies expose the student to real life experience in a controlled environment. Online instruction, Service learning and laboratory are not usually used in the same context. However, these three concepts can be used to expose students to real life projects. With learning outcomes and rubrics designed in advance, service learning hybrid instruction and laboratories can allow students the ability to participate with a real life experience. Course management software such as WEBCT can permit students to understand theories in their discipline by various tools that are available for learning online. The purpose of this study is to explore how students enrolled in an online course can participate in a Service learning project in a living laboratory.
