Abstract Text:In order to prepare faculty for success in the classroom, SAIT Polytechnic offers a pre-service instructional skills training program. Currently, the program is a two-week-long, classroom-based course. Based on the literature and an expressed need for ongoing contact and support beyond a single concentrated workshop, the pre-service course is being transformed into a year-long program called Teaching Excellence: Foundations. In addition to the introduction of a third week at the end of the academic year, the new program will also feature an online course. The purpose of this presentation is to explore the conceptual framework of the Foundations program, focusing specifically on the design of the online course.

The current pre-service program enhances the participants' ability to effectively facilitate student learning by creating a positive learning environment; choosing appropriate instructional strategies; delivering well-planned, effective lessons; creating effective assessments; demonstrating an appreciation for diversity; maximizing learner participation; and integrating appropriate instructional media. The guiding principle behind the re-design of the pre-service program is that the new program will enhance the effectiveness of the teaching practice of new faculty. The online course of the Foundations program moves the participants into an online learning environment. The goals of this phase focus on the participants' active instructional role, but done so in an online context. Specifically, over the course of the fall and winter semesters, participants will: 1) Discuss teaching and learning challenges and opportunities from the current academic year; 2) Examine the practice of effective teaching and learning; 3) Build an online community of practice.

At its essence, the philosophy of the online course of the Teaching Excellence: Foundations program is one of personal reflection and transformative learning. The goal is to improve teaching skills and build community through a structured process of online computer-mediated communication, practical inquiry, and shared reflection.
