D-2: Assessing e-Learning: A Value-Thinking Approach for Measuring the Effectiveness of e-Learning Systems
Detailed Description:This session will address a research study in a new book titled Assessing the Value of e-learning Systems, published by the speaker. This new approach helps to assess learners’ cognitive value of e-learning systems and its implications for the assessment of the effectiveness e-learning systems. The presentation will provide an overview of the theory, the case study that used WebCT, and an explanation of how to implement the approach in any e-learning program.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Researching online learning: Presentations of published papers on e-learning and WebCT
Target Audience:Faculty and Other Instructors, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The presentation will discuss a new book titled “Assessing the value of e-learning systems” authored by the presenter (Levy, 2005). The presentation will showcase the new approach to assess learners' cognitive value and satisfaction of e-learning systems to provide a robust measure of effectiveness of such systems. Up to date most measure done in industry for the assessment of e-learning systems effectiveness looked only at the ‘satisfaction' or users' perceived satisfaction. However, failing to measure learners' perceived value of e-learning systems can cause higher educational institutions to totally 'miss-the-boat' and concentrate their efforts on non-effective system characteristics. This presentation will stimulate scholarly discussion on a new approach proposed by the book authored by the presenter (Levy, 2005) as well as discussion on the definition and power in measuring learners' perceived value of e-learning systems. Additionally, the presentation will include PPT slides with discussions of the theory, rationale for the theory, and a case study of a program that implemented this learners' cognitive value approach. WebCT was the e-learning system used in the case study. Additionally, the presentation will include a section on a “cook book” approach on how attendees (primarily administrators of programs) can implement the theory in their organization. Open discussions and Q&A sessions will be provided.
